Shuffle bag

A shuffle bag deals items like a shuffled deck: every item once before any repeats, and never the same item twice in a row.

Also called shuffle deck, random without repetition.

Picking at random repeats more than you'd think. With eleven sound recordings, a plain random pick plays the same one twice in a row about one time in eleven, and players notice. A shuffle bag puts every item in, shuffles, deals them one by one and reshuffles when it's empty, making sure a new round never starts with the item that just played.

Where is it useful?

Anywhere variety matters more than pure chance: sound variants, idle lines, loading tips, which enemy spawns next. It still feels random, while guaranteeing that everything comes up and nothing comes up twice in a row.

The shuffle bag in Mytheria

The pickup sound, the most played sound in the game, has eleven real recordings dealt from a shuffle bag, with no pitch shifting. A cooldown of 0.09 seconds and a limit of two at once keep a big haul soft. The same rules play every hit sound. We released the player as a free Godot add-on: Shuffle SFX, MIT licensed.
